Prescription Drug Turn-In Event. March 13, 2010
With prescription drug abuse on the rise in Oregon and across the country, some two dozen Oregon cities are taking part in a drug turn-in program to collect unwanted and expired drugs. This statewide event is an opportunity for our community to take their unwanted drugs to a central location for incineration. In Clackamas County, Oregon City Police Department will be the collection site.
Oregon City Oregon City Police Department 320 Warner Milne Road 10:00 am - 2:00 pm Contact: Oregon City Police Department, 503-657-4964
WHAT TO BRING TO THE COLLECTION
- Expired or unwanted prescription medications*
- Unneeded over-the-counter medicines*
- Drugs that didn't work for you, a family member, or pet
- Drugs that are no longer used
- Medicine from deceased family members
- Unknown tablets and capsules
(*Leave all medicines in their original containers if possible) Please do NOT bring thermometers, needles, or medical waste of any type.
WHY THESE KIND OF EVENTS ARE IMPORTANT
- They help prevent drug abuse by keeping these drugs out of the wrong hands and to discard them safely.
- They help keep pharmaceuticals from reaching our surface and ground water sources.
The US Geological Survey and Oregon DEQ have found trace amounts of pharmaceuticals in Oregon's surface water, and groundwater. Flushing unwanted drugs down the toilet are one way drugs reach our water sources because current wastewater treatment plants technology does not adequate treat for these kinds of compounds. Oregon DEQ and the DHS Drinking Water Program consider these take-back efforts to be important drinking water protection activities.
This Statewide Turn-In event is sponsored and spearheaded by the Oregon Medical Association Alliance, CARSA, Oregon Partnership and other community groups.
